The Most Critical Window
The first 24 hours after your session are the most important period in the entire aftercare process. The pigment is freshly deposited and your scalp is actively beginning to heal. Protect the work — keep it dry, keep it clean, keep it undisturbed.
⚠ Important
Do not touch, rub, or wash your scalp for at least 4 hours following your session. Avoid any direct contact with water — including rain — for the first 24 hours.
No Water Contact
Keep your scalp completely dry for the first 24 hours. No showering over your head, no swimming, no rain exposure, and no sweating from exercise. Even steam from a hot shower can affect pigment that has not yet settled.
No Touching
Avoid touching or rubbing the treated area entirely. The skin has been worked and the pigment is settling. Even clean hands carry oils that can interfere with the early healing process.
Hats — With Caution
If you need to wear a hat, use a clean, loose-fitting option. Avoid anything that sits tightly against the scalp and creates friction or traps heat. Do not wear the same hat repeatedly without washing it.
No Sun Exposure
Keep your scalp out of direct sunlight for at least 48 hours following each session. UV exposure during the acute healing window can affect how pigment settles and heals.
No Exercise
Any activity that causes sweating should be avoided for the first 24–48 hours. Sweat introduces moisture and salt to the healing scalp and can disrupt early pigment retention.
Minimize Alcohol
Alcohol thins the blood and can increase scalp sensitivity. Avoid alcohol consumption the day of and the day after your session.
Gentle Washing Begins
After the first 24 hours, you can begin washing your scalp — gently. The goal for the first several days is to keep the area clean without disrupting the pigment below the surface.
✓ Do This
- Rinse scalp with lukewarm water — never hot
- Use a fragrance-free, gentle cleanser or foam
- Pat dry with a clean, soft towel — no rubbing
- Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free moisturizer or the recommended aftercare product
- Keep the scalp lightly hydrated — dry scalp slows healing
- Sleep on a clean pillowcase each night
× Avoid This
- Scrubbing or applying pressure to the treated area
- Shampoos with sulfates, fragrance, or exfoliating ingredients
- Hot showers or steam rooms
- Swimming — pool chlorine and salt water both interfere with healing
- Applying sunscreen, oils, or heavy products directly to the treated area
- Picking or scratching at any flaking skin
What to Expect
Some mild redness and sensitivity in the treated area is completely normal for the first 48 hours. Minor swelling around the hairline can occur and typically resolves within two days. The pigment may look darker than you expected immediately after your session — this is normal. The true healed color is visible 4–6 weeks after the session.
The Shedding Phase — Do Not Panic
This is the phase that surprises nearly every first-time SMP client. Around day 4 to 7, the pigment will appear to fade — sometimes dramatically. The scalp will look lighter, patchy, or as though much of the work has disappeared. This is completely normal, completely expected, and completely temporary.
⚠ This is Normal — Not a Problem
The shedding phase is a natural part of the skin's healing response. A thin layer of skin forms over the treated area and temporarily obscures the pigment beneath. As that layer naturally exfoliates, the true pigment color and placement becomes visible. The process is the same for every client. Do not try to accelerate it.
Day 1–2
Darker Than Final
Pigment appears bold and defined. Some redness or sensitivity may be present.
Day 4–7
The Shedding Phase
Significant fading and lightening. Looks patchy. This is normal — do not be alarmed.
Day 8–14
Settling
Pigment begins to re-emerge naturally as the outer layer continues to exfoliate.
Week 6–8
True Healed Result
Pigment has fully settled into the dermis. This is the real result.
✓ During Shedding Phase
- Continue gentle washing with lukewarm water
- Keep the scalp moisturized — hydration supports healthy exfoliation
- Allow the skin to shed naturally on its own timeline
- Contact Jon if anything looks or feels genuinely concerning
× Never Do This
- Pick, scratch, or attempt to accelerate flaking
- Apply exfoliating products to the treated area
- Wet-shave the scalp during active shedding
- Assume something has gone wrong — it hasn't
Preparing for Your Next Session
By day 10–14, your scalp should feel settled and most surface sensitivity should have resolved. If you shave your head, you may resume shaving at this point — carefully and gently. Your next session is typically scheduled in this window.
Shaving — Resume Carefully
You may resume shaving around day 10–14. Use a clean, sharp blade. Be gentle over the treated area. Avoid pressing hard against the scalp. A quality electric shaver can be gentler than a blade during this phase.
Sun Protection Returns
Once initial healing is established, SPF 30 or higher should be applied to exposed scalp whenever you're outdoors. UV exposure is the primary cause of long-term pigment fading. This becomes a permanent habit.
Session 2 Timing
Your second session is typically scheduled 10–14 days after your first. This allows the skin to heal fully and lets Jon assess the settled pigment before adding the next layer. Do not schedule sessions closer than 10 days apart.
Session-to-Session Maintenance
Most SMP plans involve two to three sessions. Each session builds on the last — deepening density, refining the hairline, or adjusting tone. Between sessions, the goal is simple: protect the healing scalp and let the work settle naturally.
✓ Between Sessions
- Apply SPF 30+ to scalp whenever outdoors — especially bald or shaved areas
- Keep the scalp moisturized daily with a lightweight, fragrance-free product
- Wash scalp regularly with a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser
- Shave with a clean blade — replace blades regularly
- Contact Jon with any questions about how the work looks or heals
- Stay hydrated — skin hydration affects how pigment settles and holds
× Between Sessions
- Prolonged unprotected sun exposure on the scalp
- Tanning beds — UV from any source accelerates pigment breakdown
- Chemical scalp treatments or dandruff shampoos with harsh actives
- Picking at any scabbing or dry patches that appear after sessions
- Heavy oils applied directly to the treated area
Protecting Your Results for Years
Well-maintained SMP results typically last 3–5 years before a color refresh is considered. Long-term care is less about restriction and more about consistent habits that protect the investment you've made.
UV exposure is the single biggest factor in long-term pigment breakdown. SPF 30 or higher on exposed scalp areas whenever outdoors — year-round. This is the most important long-term habit for maintaining result longevity.
A hydrated scalp holds pigment better over time. Daily application of a lightweight, fragrance-free moisturizer takes 30 seconds and meaningfully extends the life of your results. Avoid heavy oils or strong fragrances.
Always shave with a clean, sharp blade. Dull blades require more pressure and more passes — both create additional friction over the treated area. Replace blades more frequently than you think necessary.
Most clients return for a color refresh every 3–5 years depending on skin type, sun exposure, and desired density. Touch-ups are typically a single session — far less involved than the original treatment plan.
Once fully healed (6–8 weeks post-final session), chlorinated pools and saltwater are fine in moderation. Rinse thoroughly after swimming and moisturize. Long-term frequent exposure can contribute to gradual fading.
If you're ever unsure how your results are holding up, reach out. We're happy to evaluate honestly and let you know whether any refinement makes sense for you — no pressure, no obligation.
